Cedar Falls [13] was once a major support station for the Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad where additional locomotives were hitched to the trains to help them ascend the steep grade to Snoqualmie Pass. The crushed gravel is too large and deep to ride with a bike. The ride from the Monroe trailhead west to the Cadiz Springs Recreation Area near Browntown is a nice, easy ride but watch for ruts and loose surfaces on the trail. On its southern end, the trail joins the Palouse to Cascades State Park Trail, which extends east to the Idaho border. Since I live next to the trail and have horses, I have ridden this trail for over 17 years. The bridge is closed to all motorized vehicles until they can rebuilt it. These clowns apparently think nothing of churning up the trail itself (so that a lowly bicycle has to slog through inches of pulverized gravel to a depth of several inches in many places), but also of bullying bikers off the the trail and irresponsibly leaving the trail in their machines and wreaking havoc in the surrounding natural areas. Double Mountain Ranch. You have to work for every mile. And the views from some open meadows was great. From here, the trail continues northwest along stretches of farmland and wooded ridges for 10 miles to Darlington. The GCNA has a large gravel parking lot and portapotty on 11th St. NE, just a few hundred feet from the trail crossing. It was very windy/gusty at the top once we hit the saddle, had to sue the poles to keep upright. Trail surface is packed gravel and very easy to ride on, even with a street bike. Next to the Tokul tunnel we saw a very fit young male cyclist walking his light weight rode bike down a very steep dirt hill to reach the SVT. The trail is not the best hiking but it is unique walking across the lava fields between two cinder cone volcanos. I have ridden this entire trail in the past (first from Duvall to Snoqualmie falls and back, then later from Snoqualmie to Rattlesnake lake and back.) This was a difficult trail for bike riding. If so, it will sure make the going tough. It's level, well groomed and has many neat features such as bridges, wooded "tree tunnels/ overgrowth, great scenery including farms, rocky bluffs, fields, rivers n streams. ATVs and UTVs are not required to have a Cheese Country sticker, although they do need an in-state DNR registration sticker. We left the trail at North Bend. (One can also ride the bus down from Hyak to Cedar Falls, but that is less fun.) Slight uphill grade after about 6 miles. There's lots of wildlife to see too. The only clue is a small gravel parking lot just short of SE 60th. Here we describe a nice afternoon ride along that section of the trail and a bit beyond to where it connects with the Iron Horse Trail. The ranch is only 50 minutes from Missoula and all its amenities. Since this evening bus tour covers key areas in downtown and the Strip, its a great way to get your bearings in Las Vegas, and it includes a guided walking tour down Fremont Street, one of the citys most historic areas. Here is a change of pace. While the volcanic rock creates a strange, gritty walking surface that is barren for grass, it is great habitat for Ponderosa Pine. This area is very scenic and undisturbed. Replacing the aging approaches to the Tolt River Bridge on the Snoqualmie Valley Trail will improve public safety by increasing the currently restricted pedestrian capacity on the bridge, and by allowing access to this stretch of trail by utility and emergency vehicles. An able-bodied person will be able to lift their bike up or down these stairs, but a 60-70 electric bike will be a difficult lift if the rider is solo (if riding with others two people could lift the electric bikes one at a time). While riding the trail yesterday I noticed the trail closure signs have been updated to say that the completion will not be until November 2017. I had been looking at the wide range of wildflowers and the different colors of the basalt (black, red, brown) when I saw a rock I thought would make a good wire-wrapping piece. Several vital utilities including a sewer line are crossing on this bridge. First time on this section and found the elevation gain very easy to handle. There is parking. I signed in and read about how we should leave artifacts in place. Don't use this trail unless you're 4 wheeling, because the surface isn't ridable with a bicycle, and not enjoyable at all because of the dust and gas fumes, especially on weekends. There are two 4-mile detours going around the obstruction on either side on paved roads. We bring our atvs and utvs and enjoy. The other posts are right on. It is unfortunate that the Snoqualmie Valley Trail between Duvall and Cedar Falls is not contiguous, but a section is missing between Tokul Creek Road and the bridge at Reinig Road. A mobile fixture here is a herd of some 450 elk that migrate out of the hills to feed at the Mount Si Golf Course and the publicly owned Meadowbrook Farm, south of the trail on Boalch Road. The best part of the trail is the 9.3 miles between Vienna and Tunnel Hill. We enjoy going down to Belmont to our favorite restaurant-Sports Page.
