Play Therapy techniques are used when working with young children. Unlike adults many times children are unable to understand and talk about their feelings. Play therapy allows therapeutic expression of emotions and experiences. Art and Sand Tray Therapy are examples of two mediums.
The teens I see in my practice struggle for acceptance and recognition with peers, family and society all presenting differing expectations. The stress at times may lead to teenage depression, anxiety and destructive behaviors such as drug abuse, cutting and suicidal ideations.
As a Child Mental Health Specialist I work with children, and teenagers which include the family. With the stress families’ face today, I work closely with parents in discussing effective parenting techniques, communication and boundaries with children and teenagers.
What is Post Traumatic Stress Disorder? Traumatic events, witnessed or experienced, such as military combat, natural disasters, serious accidents or sexual assault as a child or adult, may develop into anxiety. Trauma untreated may result in disrupted family life, physical illness and reduced career performance. It is believed that symptoms may improve the sooner the treatment.
